Not sure what to do after the serve? Are your opponents dominating the net while you struggle to get ahead? The answer to your problems has a name: Drop shot. At Bürk Pickleball, we know that this isn’t just a shot; it’s the cornerstone of offensive strategy in pickleball. And at Bürk, we help you master it!
What is the Drop Shot and why is it so important?
The Drop shot is the third shot in the sequence of a pickleball point (serve, return, third shot). The goal is to hit the ball from the back of your court so that it lands softly in your opponents’ “kitchen” or NVZ (no-volley zone). A good drop shot causes the ball to bounce low, forcing your opponents to hit their fourth shot high, giving you the perfect opportunity to move up to the net and take control of the point.
It’s not a power shot, it’s a strategy shot! It’s the technique that turns a defensive position into an offensive one.
Breaking down the drop shot with your Bürk paddle
To execute a perfect Drop shot, you need to take several technical aspects into account. At Bürk, we explain the key points:
- 1. The grip: your connection with the Bürk paddle
- · Continental Grip: Most professionals opt for a Continental grip or something very similar. This grip is essential because it opens the paddle face naturally, allowing you to lift the ball over the net and add subtle underspin or topspin.
- · Firm Wrist: Keep your wrist firm and stable. Avoid excessive wrist movements that can reduce the consistency of the shot. Power and control in your shot should come from your arm and body, not your wrist.
- 2. Body Positioning and Footwork
· Smart Stance: Adopt a closed or semi-open stance, pointing your feet toward your target (usually diagonally, crosscourt).
- · Bent Knees: Very important! Bend your knees to get under the ball. The drop shot is not an arm shot, it is an “up and forward” movement that uses the strength of your legs to gently lift the ball.
- · Weight Transfer: Shift your weight forward, toward the net, during the shot. This adds controlled power and improves accuracy.
- 3. Paddle Movement: Smoothness and Precision
- · Paddle Below the Ball: Start the movement with the head of your Bürk paddle slightly below the point of contact with the ball.
- · Upward “Brushing” Movement: The stroke should be a smooth, upward movement, as if you were brushing the bottom or back of the ball. This “brushing” is essential to generate the spin that causes the ball to drop quickly once it crosses the net.
- o Topspin Drop: A faster, upward motion so that the ball “dies” after bouncing.
- · Complete Follow Through: Your Bürk paddle should end up above your shoulder in a smooth, controlled motion. A complete follow through ensures consistency and directional control.
- How do Bürk paddles help you with your drop shot? · Bürk paddles have several features that facilitate this type of shot. The grit or texture on the surface of the paddle generates more spin on the ball. Its characteristic die-cut, added to its diffusers, make it an extremely agile paddle and can add even more topspin or slice to your Drop shot. In addition, its control and large sweet spot will allow you to master this shot with ease.
Advanced strategies for your Drop shot
- • Reference point at the net: Instead of focusing on where the ball will bounce, concentrate on the height at which it crosses the net. Aim for it to cross about 30-45 cm above the edge of the net.

- · The Hybrid Drop or “Drip”: A more modern and aggressive technique. Hit the ball at 60-70% of the speed of a traditional drive, aiming for your opponents’ feet. This controlled pace causes the ball to “sink” quickly, making it difficult to return.
Exercises to Perfect Your Third Shot
With your Bürk paddle, practice makes perfect. Here are some exercises to help you master the third shot:
- 1. 0 to 60 Exercise: A partner sends you deep balls from the kitchen. Your goal is to get 60 successful drops (falling in the kitchen and bouncing low) before making a mistake. Building muscle memory!
- 2. Slinky Exercise: Start by making drops from the baseline. After every two successful drops, take two steps toward the net. Repeat until you reach the kitchen. This trains you to move forward simultaneously with the shot.
- 3. Crosscourt Drops: Practice your diagonal drops, which is the most common and effective direction. Vary between slice and topspin.
